“Absolutely Sweet Marie” se grabó el 8 de marzo de 1966 en Nashville, Tennessee. Solo se grabaron dos tomas completas de la canción. La primera toma fue lanzada en The Bootleg Series Vol. 12: The Cutting Edge 1965-1966 en 2015. 

Dylan no tocó “Absolutely Sweet Marie” en vivo hasta 1988, y la ha tocado de forma intermitente desde entonces, incluso durante una sesión para su aparición en MTV Unplugged .

George Harrison, el ex Beatle, cantó “Absolutely Sweet Marie” el 16 de octubre de 1992 en el Madison Square Garden de la ciudad de Nueva York en un concierto para conmemorar el 30 aniversario del primer álbum de Columbia Records de Bob Dylan. La pista aparece en el álbum 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration publicado en 1997 y nuevamente en 2014.
